Eugene W. Tucker letters, 1865-1868.

Eugene W. Tucker served in the U. S. 13th Infantry at the end of the Civil War and in Fort Riley, Kansas, and Camp Cooke and Fort Shaw, Montana. Collection consists of letters (1865-1868) home to his parents and brother in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Collection consists of letters (April 1865 to January 1868) from Eugene W. Tucker to his parents and to his brother in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In the letters he describes his training at Newport Barracks; his service at Camp Sherman in Nashville, Tennessee; Fort Riley, Kansas; the trip up the Missouri River to Camp Cooke, including witnessing a sundance at Fort Sully, Dakota Territory; observations of Indians; and travel to Fort Shaw, including witnessing what he alleged was the suicide of Thomas Francis Meagher at Fort Benton. In addition there are modern photos of Fort Shaw.

Eugene W. Tucker was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on February 15, 1849, the son of William and Isabel Tucker. On June 7, 1864, at the age of 15, he enlisted in the 39th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, Company G as a 100-day man. He served his 100 days before being mustered out on September 22. He enlisted with a friend Frank [surname unknown] in the 13th U. S. Infantry Regiment the following spring. The regiment trained at Newport Barracks, then was transferred to Camp Sherman in Nash...
